AustraliaSigning Off From Sydney
Sydney, Australia Oh boy, what have I done? This last blog post from Australia was ignored for almost a month meaning two things....1. It will be void of details. And 2. I spent the last weeks in denial that the trip is really over! But our good friend Dana pointed out to me via text that I am indeed in Minnesota and that I should understand and accept that the weather just has mood swings here...(read more) Surf's Always Up In Byron
Byron Bay, Australia We may have narrowly missed the Byron Bay Bluesfest but there was no shortage of live music left for us in this bohemian surf town. During dinner one night we enjoyed melodies by Hoy, an indie/folk band from Melbourne. We danced like no one was watching to a DJ at Cocomangas after being serenaded at The Rails by creative arrangements of Ed Sheeran-like songs. Everyone shouted the 'one more song' thing at The Rails performer who smiled as he responded, 'oh come on guys, I've got high school in the morning,' and then proceeded to play one last epic song...(read more) Don't Mind If I ROO
Brisbane, Australia It’s back…our love of city life! Seven countries later we fell for Brisbane – a big, beautiful, bustling city on the Gold Coast of Australia. As I write this I am sitting in XBase Brisbane Uptown Accommodation, our hostel for the last few days, and I've been struck rather hard by one loud thought. So I turn to Chris and say, ‘Hey babe, does Brisbane remind you of Minneapolis?’ I am met with the fastest “Yes, absolutely!” I have even heard come out of him prior to a second dose of coffee...(read more) Two Dingo Safe Travelers
Rainbow Beach & Fraser Island When you hear Rainbow Beach for some reason you think of sunshine and swimming. But think about it, rainbows come after rain. So why were we surprised when it poured rain the entire time? In all fairness, it is not typically as rainy as we experienced and the name actually comes from the multicolored sands on the bluffs by the beach. So we kind of lost the weather lottery on this stop, unless like me, you enjoy the irony of seeing a remarkable rainbow on a beach while in a place called Rainbow Beach...(read more) A Thrilling Ride And Being Brangelina
Airlie Beach & the Whitsundays, Australia Our next ‘hop off’ was at Airlie Beach. We started this town out right by taking a hill rather than a shortcut to Waterfront Backpackers from the bus stop. Did I mention the hike up the hill was performed while carrying our 33 and 37 pound backpacks? Super fun, but we learned two things. 1. Always give the easier path a try before taking on a hill. 2...(read more) Koala Cuddles
Magnetic Island, Australia While in Cairns we acquired a hop on hop off bus pass to take us on our way to Sydney. The first hop off was in Townsville where we stayed one night at Reef Hostel before riding the ferry out to Magnetic Island. Our accommodation choice was Bungalow Bay, a hostel and campground located in Horseshoe Bay. The property was beautiful and had an endless supply of surprise wildlife. In addition to the onsite Koala Sanctuary, we also saw...(read more) Great Barrier Reef...Nuff Said
Cairns, Australia Welcome travelers to the land of sticker shock, i.e. Australia! We thought we had prepared our minds for the uptick in prices that we would be paying for everything after leaving SE Asia but quickly found out the increase was higher than anticipated. Posts from now until the finish of world tour 2014 will be void of lavish dining descriptions as we've rediscovered what one calls a ‘grocery store'...(read more) |
